What we examine

Running a business means finding customers, paying people and deciding what the business can afford to do next. For LGBTIQA+ owners, it can also mean deciding whether being open about who they are belongs in a commercial conversation. Our research asks how those experiences connect with the way Australian organisations buy, invest and offer business support.

Some of the questions are surprisingly basic. How many LGBTIQA+ owned businesses are there? What can existing data tell us about them? When a major buyer commits to supplier diversity, does that commitment include LGBTIQA+ ownership? And what happens between a published policy and a contract being awarded?

We investigate these questions through original research, regular analysis and practical explainers. The first research project, The State of LGBTIQA+ Business in Australia, begins in March 2027. It brings together a review of procurement policies, available business and population data, and interviews with owners and buyers.

We are interested in what the evidence supports, including findings that complicate the argument we started with.

Our role

Pride in Business is a publication, not a membership organisation or certification service. We do not run a directory or a workplace inclusion program. We examine the economic questions that sit alongside that work and direct readers to the organisations and sources relevant to them, which are listed on our resources page.

Funding and publication

Pride in Business is part of Just Gold’s impact program. Just Gold funds and publishes the work. There are no subscriptions to purchase and no paid placements. Organisations cannot buy favourable coverage, inclusion in the research or the removal of a finding.

Research review

The Aurum Foundation will contribute research review and intersectional analysis. Its role is to examine the research design and interpretation, including how experiences may differ across cultural background, disability, gender, age and location.

Just Gold and the Aurum Foundation share a founder. This is a related party review arrangement, not independent peer review. Each research publication will identify the review undertaken and who was responsible for it.

Who is building it

Pride in Business is being built by the Just Gold team through its impact program. The research will be co designed with the LGBTIQA+ Advisory Board once it is appointed. Expressions of interest are open.
